Neighborhood Clean-Up = Great Success
Watch here for more details, but just walking around our neighborhood will show that the neighborhood clean-up was a success. Many volunteers from the neighborhood, U of I, the Southside business community and the city helped pull it off.
We filled two large dumpsters with debris, brush, and trash. A packer truck from the city was filled a couple of times. All finished by 2:00PM before a brief thunderstorm rolled through.

Join Us This Saturday and Clean Up the Neighborhood
The Great American Clean-Up will focus on our neighborhood this weekend.
In partnership with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, the new Gateway Business Alliance and the University Heights Neighborhood Association, UIndy is pre-registering volunteers willing to help clean the University Heights neighborhood as part of an ongoing restoration process on Indianapolis' south side.
The Great American Cleanup is the first of three events this year sponsored by the Gateway Business Alliance to encourage the revitalization of the city's Southside.
This is the first year for the cleanup, which is planned to expand into other neighborhoods in the coming years. The sponsoring organizations are hoping to rally residents to come out in support of their community.
"When four volunteer organizations come together to make something happen, it is a significant accomplishment," said David Wantz, associate vice president for community relations at UIndy. "This is a great way for businesses and community members to come together, get involved and take pride in their neighborhood."
As an added incentive, volunteers will receive free breakfast, sponsored by Starbucks, and lunch. Those who pre-register also will receive a free T-shirt. If you can't pre-register, show up Saturday and we'll put you to a good use. The schedule for the day is as follows:
7:45 a.m. - 8:45 a.m. - Registration & Breakfast
8:45 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. - Welcome Ceremony
9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - Neighborhood Cleanup
12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. - Lunch & Entertainment
Where: Registration, breakfast, and lunch will take place at the Stierwalt Alumni House parking lot. The clean-up will take place throughout the neighborhood.

Spring Meeting April 11, 7:00PM
Join us Wednesday, April 11, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. for our Annual Spring Meeting. The focus of the meeting will cover our upcoming Neighborhood Clean-Up, scheduled for Saturday, April 28. Our annual meeting will take place at the University Heights United Methodist Church at the corner of Otterbein and Hanna Avenue. Look for signs at the church. Parking is on the west side of the church.

Board Meeting March 14 at 7PM
This second Wednesday of the month of March, 3/14/07 will see another U-Heights Board meeting. On a different topic, I must say that the University of Indianapolis has been doing a great job through programs and education to reduce tensions between students and year round residents.
A while back noise and other problems seemed more common than they currently are.

University Heights Neighborhood Association Is On A Roll
With the help of University of Indianapolis and others, the University Heights Neighborhood Association has now had two public meetings and one board meeting this year.
Currently we are in a decision making process, how to reorganize. Interested neighbors, renters, students, and homeowners may attend our committee meeting which currently is held the second Wednesday of every month at 7:00PM. We will usually meet in a room at the University Heights United Methodist Church located at the corner of Otterbein and Hanna. If you attend just look for directions on the door when you arrive.
The next meeting will be November 8 at 7 PM.

Traffic Calming
A recent article discusses traffic calming and speed humps being used in Indianapolis and elsewhere. On the MPO section of the city site, the article is educational. From what I read both Edwards Avenue and Lawrence Avenue would benefit from Mid-Block Speed Control.
Mid-block traffic calming for long, straight blocks, forces the driver to concentrate and slow down. Chicanes and mid-block medians force a "wiggle" to straight streets to discourage speed. They also enhance the design character of the street, particularly in combination with street tree planting. Speedhumps would work also.
I would like to pursue some of these improvements for my street, Edwards Ave. Because it has no stop between State Street and Otterbein and police rarely ever stop people for traffic infractions here, motorcyclists, mopeders, and drivers fly down the street sometimes seeing how fast they can go. The drivers disregard the obvious fact that this is a residential street with children and pets frequently crossing the street.

A Grand Oak Ent oversees Mills Ave. A strange light in a dog hut, and a sweet light on house siding. A small fountain on the U of I campus and an old water feature in a backyard. A promise of summer and the warm wet eyes of a beagle.

Recycling
Folks, times are tough. The city is looking at ways to cut costs, and now one of those ways would be to completely drop the recycling program. Completely as in not offering curbside pick-up (which you have to pay for) or even having the city drop-off locations. There would be no recyclable option at all.
I ask that you please contact the Mayor and the Department of Public Works to please offer at least minimal recycling options. Our neighbors pay to have their recyclables picked up. We drop off ours every few weeks at the Kroger drop-off on 31.

University Heights Spared . . .
We were very lucky this past weekend.
If the tornado that hit Troy and Shelby would have come farther south, University Heights could have seen terrible damage and death. Today I rode past the damage along Troy from west of Madison to east of Keystone. Our neighbors to the north really got socked.
One of the best businesses that we have here on the southside, AMI Do-It-Best Hardware had considerable damage. I know the owners of AMI have done a lot to invest back into the Southside, along with supporting many charitable causes. Let's keep them in mind and hope they can get back on their feet very quickly.
